What makes a consecration a special service?

The consecration and ordination of a bishop is a not-very-often seen event in the life of a diocese and in the life of an Episcopalian. There are many ceremonial aspects to the liturgy that symbolize the commitment, promises and new ministry that our new bishop and our diocese will embark upon.

Some of the things we saw during the service:
The presence of, and laying on of hands, by 15 bishops (including the 7th and 8th bishops of Western Michigan).
Four processions, including civic and ecumenical leaders, diocesan leadership, and parishes.
The presentation of vestments, ring, cross, etc. to the new bishop.
The presider of the consecration will be the Most Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori. It is her first visit to western Michigan.

A light reception followed the consecration service.

about whayne hougland

A Short Biography of Our New Bishop

The Rev. Whayne M. Hougland, Jr. will become the ninth bishop of the Diocese of Western Michigan. He was elected at the Special Electing Convention of the diocese on May 18, 2013 after a year-long search process. He comes to us from St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Salisbury, North Carolina. (In case you've been wondering, his last name is pronounced: "HO-gland.") Watch a video message from Wyane.

Rev. Hougland grew up in a Roman Catholic family in central Kentucky where he became aware of his call to Holy Orders as a teenager, but when his wife Dana stole his heart in high school, he knew that becoming a Roman Catholic priest presented "significant problems." He and Dana were married in the Episcopal Church and have raised their two daughters in the church.

Rev. Hougland was called again to Holy Orders after a dissatisfying career in the corporate world. He attended The School of Theology in Sewanee, Tennessee and was ordained a priest in 1998.

Rev. Hougland believes in developing a personal rule of life, and patterns his own after the Rule of St. Benedict, which includes prayer, study and daily reflection on scripture.

He and his wife Dana reside in Grand Rapids, MI.
