Information in the Episcopal Diocese of Western Michigan

Bishop Gepert's Confidentiality Statement

Information you tell me about yourself is held in confidence unless I am required by law to report it (e.g. reporting child abuse).  As I work to bring positive change to the diocese, information you tell me about another person, parish, etc. is only helpful if I can share that information.  I may choose to check out the accuracy of the information and to name its source. Information that is presented as confidential about another, which I can’t use to affect change, is not helpful and therefore best kept to oneself.

Canon to the Ordinary

The Rev. Canon William J. Spaid
269.381.2710, x13

What is a Canon to the Ordinary?

I serve as chief pastoral assistant to the Bishop.  Along with providing counsel and support to the Bishop, I work with parishes, clergy, wardens and vestries especially in times of conflict, crisis or transition. I serve, at the Bishop’s request, as pastor to clergy and their families including our retired clergy families.  I manage the clergy licensing process, and work as staff liaison to the Commission on Ministry and monitor the ordination process files providing a personal link to our postulants and candidates for ordination.  I am also the staff liaison to the Ecclesiastical Court and assist the Bishop, with the support of the chancellor, in the management of misconduct cases.

I work with the Bishop and staff to plan diocesan liturgies such as Convention Eucharist, Confirmations, and Chrism Mass.  I preach and teach on the Bishop’s behalf, and generally work to support the mission and ministry of the Diocese of Western Michigan.
