From the 18th to the 25th of September, volunteers from our Diocese will go to the Diocese of Lexington, Kentucky in Western Appalachia. The Bishop of the Diocese, the Rev. Stacy Sauls, will be the keynote speaker at this year’s Mission Conference. Bishop Sauls presides over one of the poorest Episcopal Diocese in the United States.
Mississippi Gulf CoastFrom the 22nd to the 30th of October, Diocesan volunteers will journey to the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Episcopal Relief and Development has a ten year commitment to help restore this area in the aftermath of the hurricane. Mission on the Bay will house our volunteers. There are still over 1000 families waiting to return to their homes since Katrina. Carol Abbott from St. David’s in Lansing and Terry Dorcy from St. Luke’s in Kalamazoo will describe their mission experience and what it like to go on a mission to the Gulf Coast.
From the 12th to the 21st of November, the Diocese will conduct its last mission for 2010. The destination is New Orleans. Volunteers will either be refurbishing homes damaged by the hurricane, or participating in community beautification projects. Mission leaders Larry Emery from St. Mark’s in Coldwater and Shirley Henning from St. Phillips in Beulah will discuss the accomplishments achieved by volunteers in New Orleans.Mission Trips Sponsored by Parishes EPISCOPALIANS and CAMEROONMarshall Trinity Episcopal Church has scheduled her third mission trip to Cameroon. We will return in late January, 2011. If you have ever wanted to participate in an African mission project, this may be the trip you've been waiting for! The primary focus during our time in Cameroon will be supporting a Mobile Eye Clinic program. We will also interact with local youth. We already have two Marshall youth planning to join the team, which has opened new ministry opportunities. We are inviting other churches to become involved with our project by either joining our team or providing support to the mission projects. We are especially reaching out to our sister parishes of St Thomas, St James, and the Church of the Resurrection. One important way you can help is to collect used eye glasses for distribution by the Mobile Eye Clinic. During an optional extension trip we will visit the St Joseph Children Hospital in Bafut and the Good Shepherd Home, an orphanage in Bamenda. Prior to departure we will continue to hold fund raising activities in our ongoing support of the Good Shepherd Home. These efforts will include providing monies for the purchase of new school books for the children. We would love to speak to your Board of Missions, your Vestry, and your Youth Groups. Please contact David Begg, Mission Chairperson to arrange a program.
