Cabin Counselors at the Episcopal Youth Camp

We serve the young people of the Diocese.  We come in all shapes, sizes and ages.  We walk with children on their spiritual journey, and we are awed by their spiritual depths.  We are ensuring the Episcopal church for future generations, and watching the face of the Episcopal church now.  We are parents, teachers, lawers, clergy, older siblings, auts & uncles, Godparents and Grandparents.  We are the camp staff.  And this year we have many opportunities for YOU to be a part of it.

All cabin counselors are at least age 18 and out of high school (those serving with high school students at least 3 years older than the oldest camper, or 21), but we do have counselors in their 70s, and the majority are parent-age.  They all receive Safeguarding God's Children certification, are checked for criminal backgrounds & attend training one day during the spring & arrive at camp the day before the campers do for orientation & more training.  They attend their home congregations regularly and like working with young people.

People often ask what kind of spiritual training they need.  My answer is that they don't need any - we have people who are trained to take care of that part of camp.  Cabin counselors are there to walk the journey with the campers.  They do need to be open & encouraging - along with having patience.  They also need to enjoy having fun, because we do that a lot at camp!

Cabin counselors are the backbone of camp.  These are the people that get to share their lives with the campers.  Please consider applying, or encouraging a friend to apply.  The higher quality the staff, the better our camp.

Requirements

We do hire for positions with specific skill requirements (such as the Spiritual Director, Assistant Directors, Formation Coordinators & nurses), but most of our staff are cabin counselors.  Some of the requirements are:

  • Be an active member of an Episcopal Church (or one with similar Creeds)

  • Be able to attend the day-long counselor training.

  • Be able to work within a Christian Community

  • The diocese is very consciouncious about who it accepts, all perspective applicants are asked for references, under go criminal background checks and take the required workshop "Safeguarding God's Chldren".

Nurses/Health Professionals

We have at least one nurse (or health professional) full time at every week at camp - some weeks we have two.  These are the people who take care of our scrapes & bumps, and hand out medication.  But that's only part of their job. Most of the time they just get to experience camp - be with the campers & staff  during activities, meal time and worship.  As with all the positions at camp, this is a volunteer position (we like to call it getting paid in "God bucks," but really it's the joy of being a part of an incredible week).

Requirements

Please stay tuned while I get these up on-line.  Thank you!
